It would appear that Derek Avis has been bitten by a dragon. He was exhibiting all the symptoms Saturday: A perpetual grin, an upbeat attitude and infectious laughter.
It was his first time paddling in dragon boat, an opportunity afforded by the Welland Dragon Boat Festival, and his Port Colborne employer, J. Oskam Steel Fabricators, which ponied up the individual $695 entry fee for not just one but two teams.
“This is really fun,” Avis said from next to the paddlers’ tent village set up at Welland International Flatwater Centre.
