ESL Instructor Support

ESL is an important component of our educational system, preparing our students at all levels to meet the challenges of the all English program. The Instructor Support Role will be responsible for supporting and assisting in the teaching of Newcomers in Canada, English as a Second Language according to ESL curriculum, PBLA and CLB guidelines.
This role will support ESL classes in various locations of the Region and will require reliable transportation and flexibility.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and prepare classes, including developing detailed lesson plans based on ESL curriculum, PBLA and CLB guidelines
  • Develop learning materials that support the learning objectives and planned activities
  • Conduct needs assessment to refine curriculum planning
  • Deliver combined-skills instruction according to curriculum
  • Prepare on-going assessments
  • Keep accurate attendance records
  • Conduct end of term evaluations and next term placement reports
  • Instructing ESL classes to groups of up to 25 students using a variety of active and engaging teaching strategies/learning activities and PBLA assessment methods (multi-level class)
  • Assist students with computer knowledge
  • Assisting in the provision of daily supervision of students as required or assigned
  • Assist with workshops prepared for the students
  • Contributing to the School’s extra-curricular program and participating in other school activities such as organizing field trips
  • Other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator

Job Credentials

– University degree and TESL Ontario Adult ESL Certification
– Strong knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks, PBLA and ESL curriculum
– Highly proficient knowledge of pedagogical grammar; and an ability to develop appropriate CLB-based syllabus (Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing working through Benchmarks 1 – 8)
– At least two years’ successful ESL experience including not only instruction but also materials selection/design
